Where to Start

I decided to create a personal website, and this is it. I’m not exactly sure what I want to put on here or write about yet, but I came to the realization I haven’t sat down and written my thoughts out proabably since I graduated college in the spring of 2021. I work in technology, so I’ve written documentation, emails, Teams/Slack messages, my resume, and whatever writing comes with working at a company, but those have been only paragraphs at most at a time rather than the long research essays I used to have to write. I miss those a bit, especially on topics I find interesting. I also think, as a result, my writing skills and grammatical correctness has declined, which I want to restrengthen. Those atrophies led me to lose confidence in my writing ability and made me put off writing this first post. But after a few days of being scared in my own writing abilities and putting them in front of the world to see, I realized two things. 1) This site is mine. It doesn’t matter how bad my writing is on it or what other people think of it. It’s my place to be me and express my ideas. 2) Writing more will only improve my writing at its current level, so I might as well just start now so my improvement starts now. This, I believe, is true about everything you want to improve. Of course you won’t be the best at something you don’t do regularly. And as I’m writing this I’m realizing that there is no end goal of being a “master writer” or master anything. The whole point of the process and doing the thing is the improvement and the journey of improving. I think this is where 99% of being a “master writer” is. Though this isn’t necessarily the reason I started this website. I started it to share what I’m working on, what I’ve learned from what I’m working on, thoughts on books I’ve read, useful bits of information I’ve read that I want to explore more, and learning topics that interest me and sharing what I’ve learned. Improving my writing will just be a nice side-effect. And as I wrap up this first post, another nice side-effect is that I just feel a lot better after writing down and sharing my thoughts.

I’m not exactly sure what to put here yet or what I want to use this page to say about myself. I have taken a some inspriation for what I want this site to be from Derek Sivers’ website. He has an interesting point in his about page that one day his site will be all that’s left of him, so it’s his own autobiography. Maybe I’ll take this in the same direction. For now, this is it.
